PRESS RELEASE OCTOBER 2008

 BATH’S PROGRESSIVE PHOTOS

One of the oldest yet most progressive of photographic associations, the BATH PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY, which was founded in 1888, will hold its 2008 Annual Exhibition at the Bath Central Library from Tuesday November 4 until Saturday November 8. On display will be over 100 prints, featuring the work of more than two dozen members of the society. The high quality photographs shown in Bath Central Library will be in colour and in black and white and will range from landscape to portraiture, from details of objects to natural history.

The London Camera Exchange is once again kindly sponsoring the BPS 2008 Annual Exhibition.

The Exhibition is open daily from 9.30am until 5.30pm and admission is free. It will be officially unveiled to the press the preceding Monday evening (November 3) at 6.00pm.

Bath Central Library is in The Podium, Northgate Street, opposite the main post office in the city centre. The Podium, which has its own underground car park, is a short walk from Bath Spa station.

Images from the exhibition can be emailed to you for editorial use.

Mayor of Bath

In September 2006 the Mayor of Bath kindly agreed to become the Patron of the Bath Photographic Society. The Society is honoured to have the Mayor as Patron and it brings together two Bath institutions.

The office of Mayor dates from at least 1230 and has been occupied by some important figures in the life of the City.

The Bath Photographic Society dates from 1888 and provides a home for amateur photographers wishing to learn from other photographers, and to share their pictures and photographic expertise. It caters for beginners to the more experienced and all will find a welcome.

Bath Photographic Society member Martin Horton was judged to have the best photograph at a recent competition that pitted ten local camera clubs against each other. Organised by the Swansea Camera Club, this Ten Way Battle had entries from five members of the Bath Photographic Society who collectively scored sufficient points to put the BPS second overall to Merthyr Tydfil’s camera club, only two points behind."

Bath shaded by Woodlands
Report by Liz Bugg of George Webber Competition, November 17 2007

The Bath Photographic Society recently gave the limelight to the Calne Woodlands Camera Club. The occasion was the annual George Webber Slide Competition for photographic clubs, which this year the Bath Photographic Society hosted. No less than seven local photographic clubs each entered eight excellent slides, which were judged for merit by expert Denis Price.
The scores were very close with Calne Woodlands taking the narrowest of wins and the Bath Photographic Society finishing joint third.

Congratulations should go to two members of Bath Photographic Society.  Terry Morrow for his “Paddling into the Sunset” (scoring the maximum 20), and also to Vanessa Herring for her “Running from the Storm” (scoring 19).

The Bath Photographic Society meets on Tuesday evenings at the St Stephens Centre under St Stephens church on Lansdown Road. A calendar containing photographs taken by BPS President Alastair Chalmers and designed by Helen Strickland is currently on sale on behalf of the St Stephens Tower Appeal.
