Mike Martin - I've told you a million times, I don't repeat myself
Hello everyone - last week we had Mike Martin from Bristol Camera Club speaking about his work. Mike is very experimental and innovative in his approach, he likes to take risks and they certainly do pay off. He started off with a short explanation of how Gestalt theory fits into photography - personally this was quite exciting for me as I had never put the two together!
Through this medium amongst other things Mike covered reflections and repetitions - he also "messes about" with spirals and vanishing points. In all of his images you could see the connections here and Mike’s narrative also helped us along.
During the first half of the talk Mike showed images he had taken in some cases, decades apart and this showed us his “eye” and how his style is definitely the way he sees. It was fascinating to see how some images were almost identical even though taken so many years apart.
In the second half he showed us examples of rim lighting in portraiture -and shared some very striking images.
It was an intriguing evening and the last image brought it together wonderfully as we were taken in a kaleidoscope fashion through one changing image - the depth and complexity of this was astounding. It was like one of those children’s books which you open and keep going on into the pages in an Alice in Wonderland Rabbit hole way.
The whole talk was stimulating and engaging as was attested by the number of questions he received at the end - it felt to me like we had a journey into the labyrinths of Mike's mind!!
Thank you Mike and thank you Doug for finding him.
