Mark Reeves - Messing about with Landscapes
Hello everyone - last week we had an exceptional evening with Mark Reeves and his presentation titled “Messing about with Landscapes” . His end results though are anything but a mess! Mark started his presentation with a helpful trot through definitions of landscape and then charted his journey through his frustration to inspiration to his current works. The take away thought for me here is an understanding of how we create order in what we see - so when we look at an abstract we are programmed to see solids as land, sky and sea if any of those are at all accessible in the landscape. I know what I mean - I might not have explained it well enough!
It was an inspiring evening where Mark showed us ICM photography (Intentional Camera Movement) using people and buildings as well as the usual subjects of trees. He uses square, rotational and horizontal movement to create his images. Using generally a small aperture, low ISO, sometimes differential focusing and often (but not always) I/2 second shutter speed and 6 or 10 stop filter in daytime light, together with some processing in Lightroom and Photoshop (where he uses Blend mode). Mark is also a lovely story teller and as he showed us images and techniques he beguiled us with stories.
Slow exposures and sunrise auroras as well as double exposures in conjunction with ICM were also touched upon. An experimental photographer, Mark uses many traditional artists as diverse as Picasso, Turner and Rothko for his inspiration. You can really see this influence in his work. It's good to have such inspiration as a foundation.
Some of his projects are intriguing and he showed us one where he had created side by side black and white images of plants and architecture - amazing and beautiful. He kindly talked us through his process in creating and being inspired by this project.
Before the break Mark showed us an AV called Danger on climate change - such a powerful visual account accompanied by factual content which made us all go very quiet.
His second AV (which he showed at the end of his talk) called Sailing showed some exceptional images - very painterly and serene. These were selected from his most recent work and attracted a lot of interest from the sailors amongst us!
Throughout his talk Mark also showed us images taken by other photographers, one of whom, Nicki Green Jones messes about with colour and turns it all upside down. This was an exciting section and well worth looking her up.
