Ivy Goatcher
Last week we were treated to Ivy Goatcher’s memories of her holiday to New Zealand in 2006. She travelled partly by steam train and in the latter part of her trip she travelled by hired car. She covered a lot of what New Zealand has to offer and visited both North and South Islands.
Not surprisingly many images were of steam trains and they were very impressive indeed - even for "non train enthusiasts” there was a lot to appreciate here. We all love to see smoke coming out of a train don't we - as it completes the picture - and we had some very evocative images of trains going over bridges and hairpins with smoke.
The North Island has an amazing area called Rotorua and Ivy captured the steaming sulphur pools excellently - but unfortunately could not capture the smell which permeates from these! Maybe future developments of AI ??
Ivy has created a bit of a name for herself for loving and capturing architectural shots and she showed us the different types of architecture to be found in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.
On South Island we were shown images of Christchurch before the earthquakes - very salutary. From there Ivy travelled to Dunedin which is famous for its superb railway station- the building of which was in fact being celebrated during Ivy’s time there and so she took some interesting images of this celebration.
A flight over Milford Sound was also a part of the trip and some of Ivy's photographs of this were intriguing - meanders (some silting up) through the countryside provide some fabulous and enviable abstract images.
I was also envious of Ivy's images of the Hundertwasser Public Toilets in Kawakawa - very quirky and difficult to photograph and Ivy did a magnificent job of capturing this quirkiness.
Well done Ivy and thank you.
