Dave Mason
Dave Mason gave us a presentation on Street Photography - Dave has a very individual style and showed us some extraordinary images. He divided the talk into different and helpful sections which the titles in themselves provided inspiration. He is an “honest” photographer and seldom removes objects in the image as he prefers to present the subject “as is”.
Sometimes I shy away from “other peoples art” but in his section on Borrowed Art Dave demonstrated how "other art" can inform our own perspective. This section blended well with Dave's Galleries section showing some interesting images of peoples backs as they blended into the art they were looking at. He clearly thinks about the image he wants to create and then seizes the opportunity when it arises.
A more familiar area was a section on capturing moments of individuals and groups of people and this blended well with London Colour where Dave went to town on signage and other photographic ad hoc props. Again this was inspiring as he showed different ways of interpreting well known scenes. Often the familiar is overlooked as we are so used to seeing it and Dave’s approach demonstrates how, with acute observation we can change this.
His favourite seaside locations were evocative and some strange perspectives showed Dave’s distinctive style. Linking in with this I thought were his coastal Black and Whites - using a documentary style to show very striking images.
Paris is such a photogenic city and again Dave's treatment of this city was unique; as were his sections on UK colour and colour travel. Some of his images are quite surreal.
The Main Event section was, as the name suggests, event photography - some of us are good at that (I am hopeless) and Dave covered horse shows, Elvis events and Pride to name only a few. All of his sections provided good tips if you are nervous of Street Photography. Dave does very little, if any, post processing and relies totally upon the realistic portrayal of what he has seen. This was refreshing to see in a climate of often over processed images.
However, Dave’s latest obsession is with covered cars which has earned him recognition from the V&A for the textile used on one of the cars!
The whole presentation was a lesson in observation skills as demonstrated by an image in the Details section of a missing cat - the poster advertising the missing cat was in itself half missing. Oh yes and dogs…… I nearly forgot, his section on dogs was a treat for dog lovers!
A very enjoyable evening
